You know you've worked too long in a lab when.. oh man, i can relate to some of the mentioned points really well, like... -You can tell what cheap and expensive white coats look like -You use acronyms for everything and never stop to elaborate -Liquid nitrogen is only about a 1/3 as dangerous as you thought -Accident reports are a badge of honor -You've wondered why you can't drink distilled water in the lab - It should be clean? -Although all cooking is a glorified chemistry experiment you just still can't seem to get it right -Safety equipment is optional unless it makes you look cool -You decide the courses and conference you want to go on by the quality of the food served -No matter what the timings in the experiment protocol there is always time for lunch in the middle -Burning eyes, nose and throat indicate that you haven't actually turned on the fumehood/downdraft bench -Your slightly too fond of the smell of (pick one or many) Xylene/Agar/Ethanol/Undergraduates/Alcoholic handwash -You've left the lab wearing a piece of PPE (personal protective equipment) because you forgot you had it on -You hate having to change your lab coat to a new one because 'it just won't fit right' and because the wrist bits are way too tight -When you start making patterns in your pipette tip box as you take the tips out. -You wash your hands before and after using to the washroom -You're very good at diluting things. -No-one in your family has any idea what you do. -The scent of latex reminds you of work, not play. -People wearing shorts under a lab coat disturb you slightly as they look as though they might be naked underneath HAHA! Wednesday, August 19, 2009 almost 2 weeks' passed and i have yet to study for my modules. somehow i kinda regreted not taking a level 5 module instead, to replace a level 4 one. it's easier to score. haiz. i need to start studying, like NOW. cos im already at the bottom of the class, cap cant go any lower liao. sigh sigh sigh. lab wise, i have been doing injections everyday, but am working on the phd student's stuff, so technically speaking, i havent start on my fyp yet. argh! ok got to pack my stuff now, my new academic year resolution is to sleep at least 7 hours a day ya. anw i need to reach lab by 9.30am tml. lots of samples to run, hope to finish everyday by thurs. zzz. Wednesday, August 12, 2009 im feeling so bored in the lab. so bored til i felt like crying. the phd students are too busy to bother about me. and the supervisor just went out somewhere, dont think he will be back anytime soon. im so tempted to leave after my lunch at 2pm.... my honours friend left at 11am. i just want to get out of the lab. our workplace is so cramp and there's no leg space at all. irritating to the max. :( :( :( :( it was boring. did nothing much in the lab. just observed what the phd students were doing. went for lunch and i had some free time before my lecture, so i went to the lib to take a nap. zzz. then was back to the lab in sci for a short briefing, followed by more networking session. ok lar, the lab ppl seems nice. hmmm. no classes tml, im so tempted to skip sch. and why do i have lessons from 6pm to 9pm on thurs and fri?!?! SIGH. Wednesday, August 05, 2009 3 days with lectures. 2 days ending at 9pm. how tiring. zzzz. i think i might just fall asleep during lectures. and my free time=lab time, so i probably be in the lab for 4.5 days. whoa! but then again, it might not be enough for me, cos im really really slow. sighh. on another note, had dinner with my intern friends tonight. they like to say some really silly stuff, i can laugh til i sprain my shoulder. oops, laugh too much.. haha!! hearts them! :) Monday, August 03, 2009 went back to sch today for some talks and a course on how to look for journals. finally got to meet the whole of the honours class. everyone is so smart, aiming for first or second upper, and im like, just hoping i wont get a third. that how's pathetic. i feel so stupid man.. whatever... one more week before fyp starts, that is if i pass my safety test on fri, and i have to pass, if not it will be so embarrassing, cos i will probably be the only honours student who cant start fyp on tues cos i failed my safety test. and thank goodness i wont be in sch til fri, or maybe thurs, thinking of skipping thurs' talk since it's optional. haha.. got to enjoy my remaining holidays before i start sch ya. :( |
